To test or not to test?

By michael

One of the major areas of debate in the MMJ industry is the varying perspectives relative to the issue of testing.  For some, testing buds is essential in that in provides the objective, quantitative basis for comparing one bud to another and for judging buds on an absolute level.  For others, the science is so flawed that it renders the results nearly meaningless.  For the latter group, they argue that by taking a sample from the top cola vs. another part of the plant, the test results differ dramatically.  In this way, growers and suppliers are encouraged to submit samples that are not necessarily emblematic of the plants’ properties.

The debate goes further than whether to test and extends to testing methods.  Some laboratories employ High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and indeed this is the preferred method Full Spectrum Labs, one of Denver’s leading testing centers (http://fullspectrumlabs.com/?s=liquid+chrom).  Other labs swear the HPLC is inadequate since it analyzes the buds in their dormant state before being activated by heat, thus giving an inaccurate representation of their actual potency once activated.  To learn more about this perspective, check out Montana Biotech’s Blog that advocates for the use of Gas Chromatography.
