Purple Marijuana Buds
By michael
Most of the time when we think of marijuana, the first color that comes to mind is green (like, as in Dr. GreenLeaf!). However, the reality is that most marijuana buds feature a breadth of colors, including some plants that are predominantly purple and are referred to as “Purps”. The purple color often seen in these buds can be the result of growers tweaking the nutrient schedule, but often times is the result of the plant’s genetics.
Indoors and outdoors, bud colors can be influenced by temperature, the presence and amount of CO2, and other factors. Green chlorophyll usually keeps the plant looking green throughout most of the lifecycle, but late in the season as chlorophyll breaks down, the underlying colors, like purple, can become more pronounced.
For purple color to be vibrant all the way through drying and curing,, a strain must have the genetic potential to produce anthocyanin pigments. Hindu & Columbian Kush strains tend to develop purple coloration when subjected to low night temperatures during the end of their life cycles. Purple Orangutan, originally from Afghanistan with heavy traits of the Hindu Kush, produces some of the darkest purple and blue tones found in any marijuana strain.
